Episode 30: Dating With Health Challenges

EPISODE OVERVIEW

Niko is no stranger to adversity. Growing up as an undocumented immigrant in the US, he’s had to anticipate, face and overcome the harsh unpredictability of life on a daily basis. In 2001, Niko began developing a skin condition called Tinea Versicolor, an infection that causes discoloration of the skin in various forms. It can last months, years or even a lifetime. In Niko’s case, his eruptions take the form of dark, dry, itchy patches on his neck, back, torso, chest, and upper arms. Living with a skin condition has inspired him to examine life from many different perspectives.

Niko is the creator of the Lemonayde -- a dating app specifically for people with health challenges. Lemonayde is also the first official sponsor of This is Not What I Ordered (cue marching band music)! I really enjoyed diving into this week’s episode with Niko. His insights are so deep and relatable - I hope you enjoy!

“I don't believe that fulfillment is necessarily happiness. I believe that fulfillment is the room where happiness is kept.” — NIKO

Highlights

Niko’s wisdom can be found throughout this episode, but some of my favorite moments included:

  • How Niko learned to embrace his better qualities—rather than just identify with his skin condition— thanks to a college girlfriend

  • Discussing the difficulties he has faced as an undocumented immigrant without healthcare

  • What it means to “own your purpose”

  • The real definition of fulfillment -- and why it’s not happiness

  • How imposter syndrome can arise even with health challenges, and why we have to work to overcome it

  • How Niko learned to take his challenges (what he calls ingredients) to make something only he can

This episode is really packed with insights on what it means to live a full life with or without health challenges. Don’t miss this one!
