Episode 10: Body-Positive Chronic Love with Krista Niles
EPISODE OVERVIEW
Krista Niles is a therapist and body positive coach. She specializes in helping plus-size women live full, happy lives and navigate the complicated world of health at every size. She also created the Curvy Cupid Course, an e-course on dating at any size, and a new project called the Body Positive Therapist, which is a hub for body-positive mental health resources that launches later this year. She asks us to reconsider our attitudes toward fat and beauty standards and interrogate the societal myths about how weight is gained and lost, hoping that we can change the narrative around health and body image.
Highlights
Why she was not initially able to connect her diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the sudden weight gain she experienced.
How the cultural narrative of weight loss being solely a matter of personal responsibility negatively impacted her health journey.
Discovering the work of Robert Lustig and how it led her to recognize her condition as metabolic syndrome.
Why weight gain isn't entirely "your fault," and why it isn't something to be ashamed of.
How having a doctor or therapist with a body-positive perspective can lead to better treatment.
The issue with many widely-advertised diet plans and how many dieters relapse.
The impact stress and environmental chemicals can have on body fat.
The value in waiting for a solution and why Krista is passionate about de-emphasizing urgency in finding treatments and cures.
Dating while fat, and how your own health condition can be your best "bouncer."
How you can aim to change your size and still be accepting of the size you're at.
The path to bariatric surgery and why it can be a worthwhile treatment for some.
