Episode 59: Giving Yourself Grace with Dr. Monica Blied

EPISODE OVERVIEW

On today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr. Monica Ellis-Blied, a licensed psychologist, health coach, and chair yoga instructor living in California.

In 2012, Monica was diagnosed with lupus. Over the last eight years, she has come to terms with the idea that the word “healthy” is not a one-size-fits-all term. She also reminds us that it’s OK to throw pity parties (complete with balloons and German Chocolate Cake, when the occasion calls for it).

The way she speaks about her diagnosis, her work, and her family are a true testament to her giving nature, and her willingness to face down the challenges that come with having her condition.

You’ll notice, in this episode, that Monica has a way about her that is both refreshing and inspiring. She sees her chronic illness diagnosis as a blessing, one that has helped her slow down, to find joy in the little things, and pay attention to what truly matters. I think her insights are something we all need to hear.

“I had to confront for myself what my definition of health was because I had these messages that healthy looks like this. Healthy looks like going to the beach. Healthy looks like living your best life.”
— Dr. Monica Blied

Highlights

I laughed so much and felt inspired by Monica’s words during this episode, and I hope you will, too. There are so many memorable moments during our chat, but a few that stand out include:

  • Working to accept the things we cannot change.

  • The relationship between faith and fear related to our health challenges.

  • Feeling grief as a vital part of the chronic illness journey.

  • Why slowing down is necessary — and how chronic illness gives us this blessing (albeit in disguise).

  • The reality that high expectations and chronic illness do not mix well, and how to offset challenges with rest and grace.
